Area Engineer: Renewable Control and Special Projects

About the role

Kouga Municipality is advertising an external vacancy for an Area Engineer covering renewable control and special projects. The position involves planning, designing and executing municipal electrical infrastructure projects, including network upgrades and electrification programmes, and overseeing metering operations. The salary is R724,838.46 per annum, excluding vehicle allowance.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate and comment on electrical engineering key performance indicators against the department's business and strategic plans.
• Plan, design and execute municipal electrical infrastructure projects, including network upgrades and electrification programmes, and align them with the IDP and the Infrastructure Investment Framework.
• Manage electrical supply assets and legal matters within the municipality's jurisdiction, and prepare reports on project performance.
• Supervise the metering division, oversee metering operations, analyse metering data and implement corrective measures to protect revenue.
• Control project budgets, monitor contractor performance, approve completion certificates and handle technical disputes and contractual claims.
• Monitor staff performance, conduct quarterly appraisals, define training needs and resolve workplace conflicts.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institute (NQF level 7).
• Registered as a Professional Engineer/Technologist with ECSA.
• At least 5 years' relevant experience in a municipal environment.
• Code EB driver's licence.
• Ability to speak, read and write at least two of the official languages of Kouga Municipality (Afrikaans, English and Xhosa).

Required skills

• Strong understanding of electrical power systems, distribution networks and municipal grid infrastructure.
• Knowledge of renewable energy systems and familiarity with electrical design standards and codes (IEC, IEEE, local standards).
• Experience with network upgrade and electrification projects.
• Advantageous: electrical design and simulation software such as ETAP, MATLAB and AutoCAD Electrical.
• Understanding of metering technologies, including smart meters and revenue metering.
• Project management, quality control, report writing, supervision and negotiation skills.
