Utilities Operator – Boiler

About the role

The Utilities Operator – Boiler is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring and basic maintenance of industrial steam boilers and associated plant. The role ensures continuous steam supply to production while complying with statutory regulations and internal safety procedures.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor steam boilers, adjusting fuel, air and water feeds to maintain optimal pressure and temperature.
• Carry out pre‑start, start‑up, normal operation and shutdown procedures in line with standard operating procedures.
• Perform routine boiler inspections, housekeeping and safety checks, logging parameters such as pressure, water level and fuel consumption.
• Conduct first‑line maintenance, report faults and support artisans during planned shutdowns.
• Monitor fuel and water usage, coordinate water‑treatment parameters with service providers, and support other utility assets (compressors, refrigeration) as required.
• Ensure compliance with the OHS Act, Pressure Equipment Regulations and internal safety protocols, maintaining certificates and audit documentation.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12 with Maths and Science.
• Valid Boiler Operator Certificate (Second Class) issued by an accredited institution.
• 2–3 years experience operating industrial steam boilers in a manufacturing environment, preferably FMCG, beverage or food production.
• Familiarity with boiler water‑treatment practices and high‑pressure steam systems.

Required skills

• Operation of coal, oil or gas‑fired boilers and associated equipment.
• Interpretation of boiler performance parameters and control readings.
• Basic knowledge of boiler water chemistry and treatment.
• Understanding of mechanical systems such as pumps, valves and gauges.
• Use of logbooks and compliance documentation.
• Basic troubleshooting and maintenance of boiler plant.
• Knowledge of OHS Act and Pressure Equipment Regulations.
• Basic computer literacy, including MS Excel for logging and reporting.
