Tailings Engineer

About the role

WSP is looking for a Tailings Engineer to join its Mine Waste team in Midrand on a full‑time basis. The role is entry‑level within the consulting practice and focuses on delivering geotechnical and tailings services for mining projects.

Key responsibilities

• Provide tailings and geotechnical consultancy on mining projects.
• Design, inspect and manage mine waste storage facilities, including tailings deposits and water storage works.
• Analyse tailings behaviour, stability, seepage and closure requirements.
• Prepare technical reports, data collection and processing for project delivery.
• Support health, safety and environmental (HSSE) reporting and incident management.
• Assist in business development and internal client relationship building.
• Contribute to project financial targets and profitability.

Required profile

• BEng or BSc in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering.
• 3‑4 years post‑graduation experience in tailings or geotechnical engineering.
• Registration with ECSA preferred.
• Understanding of engineering legislation for water use and waste management licences.
• Ability to work under direction of senior staff and make limited decisions.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office applications.
• Geotechnical analysis and tailings design.
• Mine waste storage design and inspection.
• Financial analysis knowledge (work‑in‑progress, accounts receivable, DSO).
• Project management fundamentals.
