Systems Engineer – Infrastructure (IT)

About the role

PathCare, a leading medical diagnostic services provider, is looking for a Systems Engineer to join its Infrastructure team at the Cape Town headquarters. The role focuses on designing, implementing and maintaining resilient IT systems that support the end‑to‑end specimen journey.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain resilient server and application environments.
• Troubleshoot hardware, software and network issues across Linux/Unix and Windows Server platforms.
• Manage and optimise databases such as MS SQL, MySQL and MongoDB.
• Ensure data security, patient confidentiality and compliance with cybersecurity standards.
• Provide after‑hours maintenance and emergency support as required.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification (degree, diploma or technical certifications).
• Minimum 5 years experience in technical support, infrastructure or systems administration.
• Proven experience with Linux/Unix (Red Hat, SLES) and Windows Server environments.
• Strong experience with MS SQL, MySQL and/or MongoDB.
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, OSI model).
• Experience with virtualization technologies (Hyper‑V, KVM, VMware, ProxMox).
• Experience with backup and recovery tools, preferably Veeam.
• Scripting skills in Bash, Python and PowerShell.
• Security‑first mindset with knowledge of cybersecurity and compliance requirements.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• AWS Associate‑level certification (SysOps Administrator).
