Section Manager: Fire Assay and Sample Preparation

About the role

SGS, a global inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is looking for a Section Manager for its Geochem Fire Assay and sample preparation department in Randfontein. The role covers the day-to-day management, planning, coordination and operation of the department, including budgeting, staffing, equipment and accreditation compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Manage, plan and coordinate the Geochem Fire Assay department and sample preparation, keeping shift structures and rosters aligned with capacity targets and client commitments.
• Plan, review and monitor capital, revenue and expense budgets, and maintain stock levels within budget and workload constraints.
• Improve sample routing, workflow and resource utilisation, and coordinate method development and method validation.
• Ensure effective use of equipment and facilities, including breakdowns, maintenance, repairs and servicing.
• Develop, supervise and train staff, handle recruitment and disciplinary matters, and keep up with developments in analytical science.
• Attend client meetings, assist with results evaluation and validation, and ensure weekly bowl weight reports go to the Quality Manager.
• Drive initiatives to meet SGS and ISO 17025 accreditation requirements, and uphold the company's QHSE and quality management policies.

Required profile

• B.Sc, BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
• At least 5 years of experience in the relevant field.
• Solid management or senior supervisory experience.
• Validating and reporting results, and solid fire assay technical knowledge.
• Good planning, coordination and management skills, strong leadership and team management skills.
