Road Worker (10 Posts) - Roads Maintenance and Fleet

About the role

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is recruiting 10 Road Workers for its Roads Maintenance and Fleet unit, split between five posts in Tshwane and five in Johannesburg. The advertised salary is R170 226 per year, plus benefits. The position is open to applicants with no experience.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine road construction and maintenance according to approved work programmes and safety standards.
• Pothole patching, crack sealing, surfacing and re-gravelling of roads.
• Construct, repair and maintain road earthworks, culverts, side drains, stormwater drainage systems, ditches, outlets and concrete channels.
• Clean and maintain road reserves, sidewalks, drainage structures, rest areas and other road infrastructure.
• Install, replace, repair and clean road traffic signs, markings, delineators and other road furniture.
• Assist with road fencing, steel guardrails, gabions and pipe-laying works.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, small plant and specialised equipment; safeguard issued tools and equipment.
• Maintain a clean, safe work site and comply with occupational health and safety requirements.
• Assist with traffic accommodation and other maintenance as directed by the supervisor.
• Travel and sleep near construction sites across Gauteng as work is spread throughout the province.

Required profile

• NQF level 1 qualification or ABET level 4 certificate or equivalent; no work experience required.
• Ability and willingness to work under pressure, ability to work in a team, and good communication skills are an added advantage.
