Fire Alarm Design and Estimating Engineer

About the role

D2B is recruiting a Fire Alarm Design and Estimating Engineer for its client, a life safety and security specialist serving commercial, industrial and residential properties. This is a 100% remote, desk-based role under an independent contractor agreement, with UK business hours and UK public holidays observed. The salary is 18,000 to 20,000 ZAR per month.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse architectural floor plans, site videos and survey data to design compliant fire alarm and electronic security solutions.
• Produce layout proposals and equipment specifications for fire alarm systems from scale drawings and site survey data.
• Review floor plans, survey notes, photos and video to define spatial constraints and installation scope.
• Estimate cable runs, device counts, power supply units and labour requirements.
• Prepare itemised material lists, labour estimates and client quotations, securing target profit margins.
• Obtain current supplier pricing to optimise material costs and update quotes.
• Identify upgrade opportunities in legacy installations and convert field engineer notes into clear client quotes.
• Liaise with installation engineers, project teams and clients, arranging site visits when needed.
• Ensure compliance with manufacturer guidelines and British Standards (BS 5839, BS 5266, BS 7858, EN 50131/PD 6662).
• Provide technical guidance to the Service and Operations teams.

Required profile

• At least 1 year of experience designing fire alarm systems to industry standards.
• Background in system estimating, technical desktop surveying or design within the Fire and Security sector.
• Solid understanding of British Standards for fire safety installations, especially BS 5839.
• Ability to calculate unit margins, project costs and produce accurate quotations.
• Nice to have: installation or service engineer experience, CAD or PDF markup tool use (e.g. Bluebeam), and familiarity with brands such as Texecom, Hikvision, Paxton, C-TEC, Ajax, EMS Smartcell and Pyronix.

Required skills

• Reading scale architectural drawings, schematic diagrams and taking digital measurements.
• Strong knowledge of fire detection systems, with familiarity with intruder alarms, IP CCTV and access control.
