Research Nurse (Clinical Procedures) - 24 Month Fixed Term

About the role

The Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (DTHF) is looking for a Research Nurse for a 24-month fixed-term contract at the J52 Research Clinical Site, Groote Schuur Hospital. The main purpose of the position is to perform clinical procedures on research participants in line with protocol requirements and Good Clinical Practice.

Key responsibilities

• Perform clinical observations and procedures required by research protocols, such as drawing blood, taking swabs, vital signs, infusions and injections, and managing infusion pumps
• Refer queries to medical staff and the study coordinator, and assist them with study procedures
• Maintain clinical areas and equipment, check medical waste and arrange its collection
• Advise participants on basic medical conditions and help triage those with possible adverse events
• Oversee participant visits, manage screening, consent, enrolment, follow-up and home visits, and conduct participant interviews and counselling
• Contact referral agencies to recruit the right patients and complete all protocol and sponsor training
• Maintain and record cold chain temperatures and assist laboratory staff with HIV, pregnancy and urine tests and quality control
• Help study coordinators with administrative tasks such as file QC, filing results and calling patients, transcribe data into case report forms, and take part in meetings and training
• Assist with inventory, ordering and equipment management

Required profile

• Degree, diploma or certificate in Nursing and registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse
• At least 2-3 years of nursing experience
• Valid GCP certification
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends

Required skills

• Computer literacy: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Express
• Strong planning, organisation, administration and communication skills
• Teamwork, attention to detail and strict confidentiality
