Research Clinician (Medical Doctor) – Clinical Trial

About the role

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is seeking a qualified Medical Doctor to serve as a Research Clinician/Investigator for an ongoing clinical trial. Based at 22 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, the role combines patient care, trial management, and scientific reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the clinical trial, ensuring compliance with protocol, regulatory authorities, and sponsor requirements.
• Conduct clinical assessments, provide treatment or referral for participants, and document observations in source notes, patient logs, and case report forms.
• Oversee referral systems, establish memoranda of understanding, and liaise with laboratories for diagnostic results.
• Monitor adverse events, perform quality‑assurance reviews, and produce regular progress reports.
• Prepare and submit ethical approvals, ensure adherence to Good Clinical Practice, and contribute to research and funding proposals.
• Supervise and train clinical and nursing staff, manage performance, and promote teamwork within the project team.
• Analyze data, write up results, and disseminate findings to stakeholders, networks, and funders.

Required profile

• Medical Doctor (MD) with registration to practice in South Africa.
• Experience in managing clinical trials or research studies, preferably in HIV, sexual and reproductive health, or vaccinology.
• Strong knowledge of clinical trial regulations, ethical guidelines, and Good Clinical Practice.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and handle complex stakeholder relationships.
