Principal Engineer – General Civils

About the role

AECOM is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the design and planning of civil infrastructure projects across multiple market sectors, supporting both local South African teams and global partners.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and planning of civil infrastructure elements such as earthworks, grading, roads, stormwater, sewer and water utilities.
• Coordinate and manage small to mid‑sized project teams, ensuring delivery in line with AECOM Quality Management System.
• Prepare design calculations, reports, drawings, bills of quantities, technical specifications and comprehensive project documentation.
• Mentor subordinate staff and conduct technical quality reviews of BIM models and drawings.
• Develop construction cost estimates and monitor performance against budget, quality and schedule.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science or Engineering with 12+ years of relevant experience post‑qualification.
• Professional registration with ECSA and/or CPEng/CMEngNZ.
• Proven experience leading and managing infrastructure projects in multi‑disciplinary environments.
• Strong communication skills and ability to build client relationships.

Required skills

• AutoCAD Civil 3D (strong proficiency).
• ProjectWise and BIM360/ACS (good working knowledge).
• Experience with BIM execution and 12D Model (advantageous).
• Knowledge of international design specifications, especially Australia and New Zealand.
