Medical Officer – Clinical Research

About the role

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is seeking a qualified Medical Officer to support the implementation of HIV, STI and reproductive health research studies. The role is based in Tshwane (Pretoria) and involves direct clinical oversight, mentorship, and research activities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clinical oversight to site‑based nurses and ensure care follows study protocols and guidelines.
• Conduct study procedures in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and institute SOPs.
• Develop training materials, train staff, and mentor clinical teams.
• Support complex case management, including telephonic advice and referrals.
• Report adverse events, protocol deviations and perform quality‑control checks on source documents.
• Contribute to protocol development, data‑collection tools, grant writing and ethics applications.
• Assist with the preparation of abstracts, presentations and publications.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with registration to practice in South Africa.
• Experience in clinical research, preferably in HIV, STI or reproductive health.
• Strong understanding of GCP, SOPs and clinical trial regulations.
• Ability to mentor and train multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
