Mechanical Engineer / Senior Mechanical Fitter (Roodepoort)

About the role

This position delivers mechanical engineering, design review, technical coordination and on‑site support for a crude oil pipeline pump optimisation project. The work includes pump replacement, refurbishment, testing, installation and commissioning to improve energy efficiency while maintaining required flow performance.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and review mechanical designs for centrifugal pump replacement and refurbishment, including pump sizing and NPSH verification.
• Coordinate modifications to suction/discharge piping, baseplates, pedestals, nozzles, manifolds and related interfaces.
• Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, scopes of work, data sheets and equipment specifications.
• Support hydraulic modelling to confirm flow and pressure targets before procurement and after commissioning.
• Oversee refurbishment of 2‑, 3‑ and 4‑stage pumps, including defect identification, repair scope definition and performance testing.
• Review FAT, SAT, commissioning plans, vibration reports, alignment results and final performance reports for compliance.
• Coordinate with OEMs, contractors, electrical and civil teams throughout design, manufacture, installation and handover.
• Ensure delivery of drawings, manuals, SOPs, maintenance job cards, spares lists and data books for operations.
• Provide site execution planning, shutdown coordination, lifting and rigging reviews and mechanical troubleshooting.

Required profile

• Proven experience with centrifugal pump replacement, refurbishment and testing on pipeline projects.
• Strong background in hydraulic modelling and engineering calculations.
• Ability to produce detailed technical documentation and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
