Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Durbanville. The role involves developing and managing mechanical designs for commercial vehicle projects, collaborating with suppliers and internal departments to deliver cost‑effective, compliant solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Evaluate task scope and define work packages.
• Prepare and maintain bills of materials and associated 3D assemblies.
• Manage product data throughout the design lifecycle.
• Create 3D parts and 2D drawings that meet supplier and regulatory requirements.
• Liaise with overseas suppliers and customers on design matters.
• Conduct concept and design reviews.
• Operate CAD software packages and PLM systems.
• Support day‑to‑day customer activities.
• Provide creative, technically feasible solutions for cost savings and product improvements.
• Interface with materials, purchasing, analysis, test, manufacturing, and compliance teams to optimise design and ensure regulatory adherence.

Required profile

• BEng or BTech degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years of mechanical design engineering experience.
• Self‑starter with strong attention to detail and ability to handle complexity in a fast‑paced environment.
• Willingness to travel overseas (USA) as required.
