HSE Safety Officer – Construction Projects

About the role

A Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Officer is sought for a 12-18 month fixed-term contract based in Johannesburg. The post covers health, safety and environmental compliance on construction and industrial projects, ensuring activities meet applicable legislation, construction regulations and client-specific HSE requirements. Experience with generator installations, heavy lifting, electrical systems and commissioning is an advantage.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, construction regulations, environmental law and client requirements; monitor site activities against approved safety procedures.
• Carry out hazard identification and risk assessments, review method statements and implement control measures.
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, conduct root cause analysis and track corrective actions.
• Manage permits for hot work, working at heights, excavations, confined spaces and electrical isolation.
• Monitor construction and installation activities, conduct routine site inspections and enforce safety controls.
• Manage generator installation, lifting and rigging safety, including crane operations and equipment inspections.
• Run HSE inspections, internal audits and compliance assessments, and document findings and corrective actions.
• Develop emergency procedures, run emergency drills and support incident response and evacuation.
• Deliver HSE inductions, toolbox talks and safety briefings, and promote a positive safety culture.
• Monitor waste management, spill prevention and environmental compliance, and report environmental incidents.
• Check contractor and subcontractor compliance, competencies and safety documentation, and review their HSE performance.
• Prepare inspection, incident and audit reports, safety registers and monthly HSE statistics, and report performance to project management and clients.

Required profile

• National Diploma in Safety Management or Environmental Health.
• SAMTRAC certification.
• SACPCMP registration as a Construction Health and Safety Officer (CHSO) or Candidate CHSO.
• 3-5 years of HSE experience in construction or industrial projects.
• Experience with site audits, inspections, incident investigations, risk assessments and contractor safety management.
