Principal Civil Engineer

About the role

Woolpert, a global leader in architecture, engineering and geospatial services, is hiring a Principal Civil Engineer to join its Johannesburg team. The position reports to the Site Civil Engineering Team Leader.

Key responsibilities

• Design and create site layout plans in line with client requirements and Woolpert standards.
• Use AutoCAD Civil 3D to develop concept plans, grading plans and site designs.
• Work with project management teams to identify impediments and develop and implement solutions.
• Carry out site due diligence assessments and compile data and reports.
• Perform occasional field work and frequent local and overnight travel as needed.

Required profile

• BEng / BSc (Eng) in Civil Engineering from a recognised South African university.
• At least 10 years of post-graduate experience in civil engineering, ideally in infrastructure, hydrology, stormwater management or structural design.
• Engagement with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).
• Ability to manage multiple infrastructure projects, prepare design documentation and reports, and comply with the ECSA Code of Conduct and project delivery timelines.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D or AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil design, roads, drainage and stormwater systems.
• Stormwater drainage design, runoff calculations and compliance with local bylaws (e.g. SANS 1200, SANS 10400 and municipal stormwater standards).
• Knowledge of hydraulic and hydrological modelling (HEC-RAS, EPANET, SWMM or Civil 3D hydrology modules) is highly advantageous.
