Health & Safety Officer – Manufacturing

About the role

Our client in Blackheath, Cape Town is seeking a hands‑on Health & Safety Officer to ensure compliance across its manufacturing sites. The role is practical and field‑based, involving regular interaction with employees, supervisors and external consultants to maintain a safe working environment.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain health and safety documentation, statutory registers and compliance records.
• Conduct regular workplace inspections, identify hazards and follow up on corrective actions.
• Assist with risk assessments, safe work procedures and implementation of controls.
• Monitor PPE usage and ensure adherence to site safety standards.
• Coordinate safety inductions, toolbox talks and employee training.
• Maintain records for medical surveillance, inspections, equipment and incidents.
• Support incident and near‑miss investigations and ensure corrective actions are completed.
• Organise emergency procedures, fire drills and evacuation exercises.
• Manage chemical registers, Safety Data Sheets, spill kits and waste records.
• Verify contractor compliance before work commences.
• Schedule inspections, servicing and certification of safety equipment and machinery.
• Assist with Injury on Duty administration and related documentation.
• Travel between company sites as required.

Required profile

• Grade 12 / Matric qualification.
• SAMTRAC or recognised Health & Safety qualification (preferred/required).
• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations.
• Previous experience in a Health & Safety role within manufacturing, engineering, warehousing or chemicals.
• Strong administration and record‑keeping abilities.
• Excellent communication skills and confidence to engage at all organisational levels.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel between sites.
