Head of Communications (Africa)

About the role

The Head of Communications will lead Greenpeace Africa’s communications function, shaping the organisation’s public profile, influencing discourse on climate justice and environmental issues, and supporting campaigns across the continent and globally.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement an integrated communications strategy aligned with campaign priorities and organisational goals.
• Lead media relations, including proactive outreach, press releases, interviews, briefings and acting as senior spokesperson when required.
• Oversee editorial production for both Anglophone and Francophone audiences, ensuring high‑quality on‑ and offline content.
• Manage crisis communications and brand reputation across all channels.
• Collaborate with the Deputy Engagement Director, Digital Lead and programme teams to create compelling storytelling and campaign materials.
• Guide a communications team of seven employees, fostering creativity and strategic thinking.
• Build and maintain relationships with African and international media outlets.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience leading communications for NGOs, advocacy groups or similar organisations.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex environmental and political issues into clear public narratives.
• Strong leadership and team‑management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English; French is an advantage.
• Willingness to work in a hybrid model with a primary base in Johannesburg.
