Head of Actuarial – Senior Actuarial Leader

About the role

The Head of Actuarial will lead independent review and validation of actuarial assumptions, IFRS 17 and SAM basis setting, and model development for both IFRS 17 and SAM. This senior role supports the first‑line Balance Sheet Management functions within a financial services environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and execute assumption review and model development work‑plans.
• Review actuarial assumptions such as lapses, mortality, expenses, and pressure‑test contract boundary assumptions for IFRS 17 and SAM.
• Validate Prophet and ResQ models, including gross and financial reinsurance modelling, and produce ORSA projections.
• Review IBNR triangulation results and provide high‑level review of IFRS 17 and SAM annual results.
• Document and communicate review outcomes to Balance Sheet Management and broader stakeholders.
• Collaborate with the outsourced Head of Actuarial Function to ensure validation comfort and governance.

Required profile

• Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (Life Fellowship preferred) with a minimum of 10 years post‑qualification experience.
• At least 5 years in a senior validation, modelling, or assumption governance role.
• Advanced understanding of life valuations under IFRS 17 and SAM.
• Strong knowledge of financial reinsurance mechanics.
