About the role
The Furnace Operator works within the Community Services Department to manage cremation processes and maintain the crematoria facilities. The role involves direct interaction with the public and careful handling of equipment and remains.
Key responsibilities
- Perform the cremation of bodies.
- Maintain crematoria facilities, grounds and infrastructure.
- Keep allocated small plant and equipment clean and functional.
- Assist members of the general public.
- Observe smoke emissions to ensure minimal release.
- Move coffins from the chapel to the committal chamber using electronic controls as required.
Required profile
- Managing work and planning tasks effectively.
- Ensuring workplace safety and adhering to facility‑specific procedures.
- Ability to work with human remains and handle sensitive situations.
- Willingness to work overtime when needed.
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent, with at least 3 months relevant experience.
Required skills
- Operation of small plant and equipment.
- Facility maintenance and upkeep.
