Civil Engineer – Water Resources & Hydrology

About the role

Our client is seeking a Civil Engineer – Water Resources to join the Engineering Hydrology division. Reporting directly to the Head of Department, the role will be based in the Johannesburg office and will focus on hydrological and hydraulic analyses for surface‑water and dam‑related projects.

Key responsibilities

• Acquire, process and analyse hydrological data (rainfall, runoff, evaporation) and calculate catchment parameters such as MAP, MAE and MAR.
• Perform surface‑water runoff, flood peak, water‑balance and reservoir routing calculations using deterministic, statistical and dynamic modelling methods.
• Develop hydraulic designs including back‑water profiling, flood attenuation, canal flow, spillway optimisation and dam‑break analysis.
• Conduct flood risk, flood hazard and surface‑water impact assessments, and produce floodline determinations.
• Model water balances and reservoir behaviour with GoldSim and assess canal routing with tools such as PCSWMM and HEC‑RAS.

Required profile

• BSc Eng (Civil) or BEng (Civil) with an MSc/MEng in Hydrology or Hydraulics.
• 5–7 years of relevant experience in water‑resources engineering, preferably in mining or industrial contexts.
• Proven experience using GoldSim for water‑balance development and assessment.
• Valid South African driver’s licence and strong knowledge of local water‑management legislation.
• Excellent written and spoken English with solid technical report writing skills.
