After-Hours Veterinarian

About the role

A respected veterinary hospital in Johannesburg is looking for an experienced, confident after-hours veterinarian to join its team. The role suits someone who enjoys emergency medicine, values patient and client care and can make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment. The schedule is built around generous time off: one month of five nights on followed by five nights off, alternating with one month of weekend and public holiday days only.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, examine and diagnose patients' medical conditions
• Perform surgical procedures, wound care and treatments
• Carry out diagnostic laboratory work, imaging and ultrasound where required
• Prescribe and manage medical treatments
• Promote preventative health through vaccinations and wellness care
• Educate clients on optimal pet care and lifestyle choices
• Perform humane euthanasia when necessary
• Ensure compliance with veterinary ethics, policies and legislation
• Maintain accurate and detailed medical records

Required profile

• Approximately five years of post-graduate veterinary experience
• Registered with the SAVC
• Preferably experienced in after-hours and emergency veterinary care
• South African citizen or permanent resident
• Independent thinker who stays calm under pressure and works both as a team player and autonomously
