ICU Registered Nurse

About the role

A vacancy exists for a Registered Nurse qualified in critical care, based in the Surgical ICU at Life Flora Hospital in Johannesburg. The nurse reports to the Unit Manager, Maile Makoala, and provides holistic, high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients so that outcomes are maximised in line with the hospital's strategic objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide quality basic and specialised nursing care, communicate continually with patients and families about their condition, and administer medication in line with ethical and legal frameworks.
• Follow internal policies and protocols, and ensure quality management systems run according to unit specifications.
• Advocate for patients by escalating acuity to case management and notifying doctors of any limitations.
• Work with a multi-disciplinary team, train and develop staff, and ensure the ICU team works within its scope of practice.
• Manage stock according to unit policies, control staff hours and leave, and maintain infection control and a safe working environment through SHEQ alerts and incident reports.
• Support doctors and other team members during patient rounds, check equipment daily and report faults, and educate staff on the use of specialised equipment.
• Keep accurate records stored in line with legal and ethical requirements.

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in Critical Care Nursing.
• Nursing experience in the ICU.
• Strong customer orientation, teamwork, organisation and ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
• Willingness to work under the unit's flexi-hours and call system.
