Payroll and Benefits Officer

About the role

The Payroll and Benefits Officer will be responsible for managing the end‑to‑end payroll process and administering the company’s benefits and compensation programmes. Working within the People and Culture team, the role requires close collaboration with the Finance team to ensure accurate and timely payroll delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Receive payroll information and accurately input data into the company payroll system.
• Capture monthly timesheet hours, commissions, gratuities and any ad‑hoc payroll inputs, including deductions.
• Process leave records, including maternity leave remuneration, in line with company policies.
• Ensure timely processing of new hires, temporary workers, transfers, promotions and terminations.
• Maintain employee direct deposit details, tax changes and benefits enrolments.
• Prepare and distribute regular management reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly, year‑end) covering gross payroll, hours worked, leave accruals, tax and benefit deductions.
• Submit South African Revenue Services returns and related documentation to the Department of Labour.
• Audit payroll balance sheets, year‑to‑date earnings and ensure compliance with tax and labour regulations.
• Review and improve payroll, benefits and tax procedures to achieve best‑practice operations.
• Administer employee benefits such as medical aid, retirement fund, disability and death claims.

Required profile

• Hands‑on experience in payroll processing and benefits administration.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately with large data sets.
• Proven ability to collaborate closely with finance and HR teams.
• Knowledge of South African payroll legislation, tax regulations and labour standards.
• Analytical mindset to review procedures and recommend improvements.
