Mechanical Design Engineer – Truck Trailers

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of truck trailers and related components. You will work from concept through to manufacturing, ensuring robust, compliant, and cost‑effective solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop truck trailers and trailer components using 3D CAD software.
• Prepare detailed manufacturing drawings, bills of materials (BOMs) and assembly documentation.
• Perform structural and mechanical calculations, including FEA where required.
• Support production teams during manufacturing and assembly, providing technical guidance.
• Conduct design reviews, fault finding and propose engineering improvements.
• Ensure compliance with South African road transport regulations and industry standards.
• Liaise with suppliers, project managers and production teams.
• Participate in prototype development, testing and validation.

Required profile

• BEng/BTech or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
• 3–5 years of experience in truck trailer or heavy‑vehicle design.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Strong problem‑solving and communication abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD or Inventor.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes, welding and sheet‑metal fabrication.
• Experience with FEA analysis and structural design (advantageous).
• Knowledge of trailer regulations and automotive standards.
