Fitters Assistant

About the role

The SA Steelworks Fitters Department is looking for a dedicated Fitters Assistant to support daily maintenance activities. This entry‑level position offers hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced metal production environment.

Key responsibilities

• Change water and hydraulic piping and strip machine parts for cleaning.
• Assemble machine components after cleaning and perform routine inspections.
• Grease plant equipment and vehicles, fill grease guns, and conduct housekeeping in the workshop.
• Measure equipment, read tape measures, and assist the fitter with larger maintenance tasks.
• Operate grinders and drilling machines safely, change drill bits and grinder discs, and fit bearings before assembly.
• Identify and use various tools and spanners, and support the manager/supervisor with ad‑hoc duties.

Required profile

• Grade 12 certificate and a Certificate in Fitting and Turning.
• Previous experience in a similar industrial setting.
• Willingness to work overtime when required.
• Good physical health and ability to work in challenging climatic conditions.
