Electrician – South Africa Radio Astronomy Observatory

About the role

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is seeking an electrician to support the Electrical Functional Group, project managers and facilities management. The role involves designing, installing and maintaining electrical systems for the MeerKAT and Hartebeeshoek telescopes and related infrastructure projects.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing electrical designs, technical specifications, studies, procurement and CAD layouts for new installations and plant modifications.
• Coordinate with senior power engineers, site operations and other stakeholders to integrate electrical systems into project plans.
• Document findings from tests and inspections and report issues to senior engineers and project managers.
• Plan, audit and implement modifications and installations of wiring, equipment and fixtures in line with local building and safety codes.
• Provide electrical support for installations, fault finding, repairs and troubleshooting of electrical systems.
• Maintain asset registers, update maintenance plans and ensure quality control of electrical assets.

Required profile

• Diploma/Advanced Certificate/NQF 6 in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in building electrical infrastructure and distribution switchgear.
• Qualified Electrician – Trade Test and valid Wireman’s licence; motor vehicle licence required.
• Experience with CAD packages and Microsoft Office; knowledge of Eskom ORHVS and OHS standards.
