Artisan Production Grade A/B – Carpenter

About the role

The KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Health is seeking skilled carpenters (Grade A and Grade B) to maintain and develop timber structures at Queen Nandi Regional Hospital. You will be responsible for a wide range of carpentry and joinery tasks that support the safe and efficient operation of the hospital facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out maintenance, repairs, installation and replacement of doors, windows, cupboards, cabinets, counters, shelves, partitions and other wooden structures.
• Install and maintain hospital furniture, fittings, fixtures and specialised timber components in wards, theatres, clinics and offices.
• Inspect buildings and infrastructure, identify defects and perform preventative and corrective maintenance.
• Read and interpret drawings, sketches and specifications to execute carpentry projects.
• Operate, maintain and ensure safe use of hand tools, power tools, machinery and workshop equipment.
• Maintain accurate job cards, maintenance records and material usage logs.
• Supervise and mentor Artisan Assistants, interns and apprentices where applicable.

Required profile

• Grade 10 education.
• Trade Test Certificate in Carpentry (Manpower Act section 13(2)(h)).
• Grade A: 0‑2 years relevant experience after certification.
• Grade B: Minimum 14 years relevant experience.

Required skills

• Carpentry and joinery workmanship.
• Ability to read technical drawings and specifications.
• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety, infection control and building regulations.
