Volunteer Doctor in Rural South Africa

About the role

The Tshemba Foundation is seeking qualified medical professionals to volunteer in rural hospitals and clinics across Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces. This role offers a unique chance to provide essential healthcare, share expertise with local staff, and experience medical cases uncommon in urban settings.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct or indirect patient care in public hospitals and surrounding clinics.
• Support medical staff through postgraduate training, mentorship, and formal teaching.
• Assist with administrative tasks, clinical quality improvement projects, and development of health protocols.
• Collaborate with local teams to design and implement health interventions.

Required profile

• Current medical license in good standing.
• Registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
• Registered medical professional; priority given to GPs, family physicians, diabetologists, neurologists, dermatologists, hospitalists, ophthalmologists, paediatricians, general surgeons, optometrists, speech therapists, and dieticians.

Required skills

• Clinical expertise in family medicine, diabetes management, neurology, dermatology, hospital medicine, ophthalmology, paediatrics, or general surgery.
• Ability to teach, mentor, and support local healthcare providers.
