Unit Manager – SCCU

About the role

Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre is looking for a Unit Manager for its SCCU (Surgical Critical Care Unit). The manager leads the nursing team, ensures quality nursing care and service delivery within a multi-disciplinary team, and coordinates capacity building, mentoring, coaching, training and development. The position is based at the hospital in Durban.

Key responsibilities

• Provide effective leadership and management of the SCCU nursing team
• Ensure quality patient care and promote clinical excellence
• Manage staffing, resource allocation and operational efficiency within the unit
• Maintain compliance with hospital policies, quality standards and healthcare legislation
• Facilitate staff development, performance management and ongoing training
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes
• Take part in quality improvement, infection prevention and risk management activities
• Ensure infection prevention and international standard precautions are followed
• Ensure accurate clinical documentation and effective communication within the healthcare team
• Join the after-hours and weekend on-call roster as allocated
• Promote stakeholder relations

Required profile

• Relevant nursing qualification (B.Cur. degree or relevant management qualification)
• Post-Basic ICU qualification essential; cardio-thoracic experience advantageous
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse, complying with the SANC code and applicable legislation
• 3-5 years of unit management experience in ICU essential; private sector experience advantageous

Required skills

• Compulsory BLS certification
• ACLS/PALS/ITLS advantageous
• Advanced computer literacy
