Tier 3 Network Engineer

About the role

An established IT services company is looking for an experienced Tier 3 Network Engineer to take ownership of complex technical escalations, support infrastructure projects and guide other engineers. The role is onsite in Plattekloof, Cape Town, within a Managed Service Provider (MSP) environment working across multiple client networks. It involves hands-on work with Fortinet, Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Azure, VMware, Hyper-V and networking and security technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Resolve complex Tier 3 incidents escalated by Tier 1 and Tier 2 engineers.
• Troubleshoot network, firewall, server, cloud, virtualisation and security issues.
• Configure and maintain firewalls, switches, VPNs, VLANs, wireless networks and LAN/WAN connectivity.
• Support Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune and Azure environments.
• Manage VMware and Hyper-V virtualisation environments.
• Support backup, disaster recovery, endpoint protection and email security solutions.
• Investigate recurring incidents, find root causes and implement preventative solutions.
• Plan and deliver infrastructure upgrades, migrations, firewall replacements and cloud deployments.
• Prepare technical documentation, project plans, Statements of Work and bills of materials.
• Mentor junior engineers and communicate with clients while maintaining service delivery standards.

Required profile

• Minimum 6 years' experience in IT support, network engineering or infrastructure, preferably in an MSP environment.
• Proven Tier 3 experience resolving complex technical issues independently.
• Experience guiding engineers and delivering technical infrastructure projects.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation and client communication skills.

Required skills

• Networking: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, subnetting, VLANs, routing, switching, VPNs, LAN/WAN.
• Fortinet FortiGate firewalls and network security.
• Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy; Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Entra ID, Intune and Azure.
• VMware vSphere/ESXi and/or Hyper-V.
• SAN/NAS storage, backups and disaster recovery (ideally Veeam or Acronis).
• Endpoint security, EDR and remote monitoring tools such as Sophos or Barracuda.
• PowerShell scripting and automation; incident, problem and change management.

Advantageous certifications include Fortinet, CCNA, Microsoft Azure (AZ-104), Microsoft 365, VMware, Veeam, Sophos or ITIL. Candidates apply with an updated CV highlighting their Tier 3 experience and networking expertise.
