SMED Assistant

About the role

The SMED Assistant supports the optimisation of machine setup and changeover processes at MCC Label in Paarl. By applying SMED principles, the role helps minimise downtime, boost equipment efficiency and keep production schedules running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver daily SMED team objectives related to job preparation and press changeovers.
• Assist with press changeovers, plate remounting and roll changes on Verbex and lamination units.
• Ensure all jobs are SMED‑ready and verified before moving to the press.
• Support continuous‑improvement initiatives to reduce changeover times.
• Monitor presses during lunch breaks to maintain 24‑hour operation.
• Clean presses, especially the gravure unit, and maintain ink and solvent supplies.
• Manually check gravure ink viscosity and calibrate the viscosity meter throughout the shift.
• Handle waste matrix bins and perform general housekeeping around the press area.
• Work in line with site safety standards, quality systems and KPI targets.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
• High accuracy and strong attention to detail.
• Team player who can also work independently and under pressure.
• Good communication skills and a quality‑focused mindset.
• Experience in the printing industry is advantageous.
