Senior Minisub Designer

About the role

The Senior Minisub Designer will lead the design and optimisation of miniature substations and LV panels, ensuring compliance with national and international standards. You will work closely with engineering, quality, sales and manufacturing teams to deliver reliable, cost‑effective solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare mechanical calculations based on material characteristics and equipment specifications.
• Optimise designs with cost calculations, considering stock availability and customer requirements.
• Maintain and analyse complex mini‑substation design databases.
• Interpret and apply national and international standards for transformers and mini‑substations.
• Train and support personnel in design and system applications.
• Identify risks and opportunities throughout the design process.
• Provide technical information and interpret test results for transformers and mini‑substations.
• Use customised engineering design software and recommend improvements.
• Coordinate quality checks and inspections during manufacturing.
• Inspect, assess and quote mini‑substations for repair, producing failure reports.
• Support sales, contract administration, purchasing and manufacturing with technical data.
• Assist in preparing and reviewing technical standards and product certifications.

Required profile

• Matriculation certificate.
• BTech or equivalent Mechanical Engineering qualification.
• Minimum 5 years experience in miniature substation, LV panel or transformer design.
• At least 7 years post‑graduate experience in heavy‑current/high‑voltage industry.
• Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical calculations, manufacturing processes and testing procedures for transformers and mini‑substations.

Required skills

• Advanced AutoCAD (SolidWorks is a plus).
• Proficiency with Windows, MS Word, Excel, MS Project and PowerPoint.
• Familiarity with Syspro ERP system.
