Senior Mechanical Draughtsperson

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Draughtsperson to join our Drawing Office in Johannesburg. The role involves producing, checking and releasing high-quality mechanical engineering drawings and CAD models for manufacturing, while mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Produce accurate, production-ready 2D mechanical drawings and detailed 3D CAD models.
• Interpret engineering requirements from sketches, samples, calculations and specifications.
• Apply appropriate tolerances, GD&T, surface finishes, material specs and manufacturing notes.
• Review and check drawings and models created by other draughtspersons.
• Manage drawing revisions, engineering changes and document control in line with company procedures.
• Support workshop, manufacturing and quality teams with drawing-related queries and resolve NCRs.
• Participate in root-cause investigations where drawing information contributed to production issues.
• Mentor junior draughtspersons and help improve office standards, templates and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and relevant engineering standards.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years experience in a mechanical drawing office or similar environment.
• National Diploma, Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Draughting or related field.
• Strong knowledge of machining, fabrication processes, tolerances and fits.
• Proven ability to produce detailed manufacturing drawings and reverse-engineer existing components.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
• Expertise in GD&T, tolerances and fits.
• Mechanical drafting and 3D CAD modelling.
• Understanding of engineering drawing standards and ISO 9001 documentation.
