Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Tooling & Moulds

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the creation of high‑performance tooling for both plastic injection moulds and metal press tools. The role is based in Pinetown, KwaZulu‑Natal and focuses on delivering precision‑engineered solutions that drive manufacturing efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Design end‑to‑end tooling, from concept sketches to production‑ready CAD models.
• Develop multi‑cavity injection moulds and complex progression press tools that optimise cycle time.
• Lead progression die development, including strip layout and forming strategy design.
• Apply simulation and DFM techniques to mitigate risk before toolroom release.
• Collaborate with manufacturing teams to resolve real‑time issues during tool build and T1 trials.
• Support continuous improvement and redesign throughout the tool lifecycle.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing both plastic injection moulds and metal press tools.
• Strong background in progression tooling and strip layout development.
• Deep understanding of tool steels, heat‑treatment processes, and polymer material behaviour.
• Experience working in ISO‑driven manufacturing environments.
