Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor – School of Mathematics

About the role

The School of Mathematics at Wits seeks a senior academic to join its teaching and research community. Candidates with expertise in Algebra, Analytic Combinatorics, Logic, Number Theory or any other mathematical field are encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics courses, including large first‑year classes.
• Maintain an active research programme and supervise MSc/PhD students.
• Participate in school, faculty and university administration, including committee work; Associate Professors will lead school‑level portfolios.
• Secure national and international research funding and contribute to the AMPLIFY unit focused on innovative pedagogy for first‑year students.

Required profile

• PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated excellence in tertiary teaching and a commitment to innovative teaching strategies.
• Evidence of high‑quality research output in peer‑reviewed journals and a record of supervising MSc/PhD candidates.
• Service experience within a university context; for Associate Professor level, proven leadership in academic departments or professional bodies.
