Head of Music - Preparatory School

About the role

Reddam House Constantia, a preparatory school in the Constantia Valley open to children from Stage 1 to Grade 12, is looking for a Head of Music. The post teaches music to Grades 1-7 and manages the peripatetic team of music staff.

Key responsibilities

• Teach music to Grades 1-4 and deliver the elective music curriculum in Grades 5-7
• Create a nurturing, positive learning environment and encourage a passion for music in all students
• Evaluate and refine teaching practice to meet the needs of diverse music students
• Teach extra lessons on two afternoons per week and produce high-standard learning materials
• Manage the department: coordinate student sign-ups and allocation to music staff, set expectations and monitor progress
• Help interview and appoint music staff and provide leadership and support to them
• Work with the College Head of Music on offerings and combined performances, and help arrange music and cultural events
• Take part in the wider Preparatory School Cultural Department (art, drama, dance and music) and in staff development, team building, camps and community events

Required profile

• At least 5 years of teaching experience in a preparatory school setting
• Experience managing a large department or team of music teachers
• Essential experience working with choirs and piano; African marimba ensemble experience is beneficial
• University degree in a relevant subject such as Music, Music Education or Education with a Music specialisation
• Certified teaching status (SACE registration or equivalent) and legal right to work in South Africa
