Senior Lecturer in Rock Mechanics and Engineering Geology

About the role

North-West University seeks a Senior Lecturer to join the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences – Geo and Spatial Sciences. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules within the Sustainable Mining Programme, supervise research students, and contribute to the university’s research profile.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Geology, Rock Mechanics and Engineering Geology.
• Conduct research on geology, soil sciences, engineering geology and rock mechanics within the Unit for Environment Sciences and Management.
• Supervise MSc and PhD candidates and guide their research projects.
• Publish research findings in reputable national and international journals and present at conferences.
• Secure research funding through grant applications.
• Participate in curriculum development and other administrative duties.
• Engage with local communities to apply geological expertise to identified issues.

Required profile

• PhD in Geological Sciences, Engineering Geology or Mining Engineering (NQF level 10).
• Minimum three years of experience teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• At least one peer‑reviewed publication or a strong research record.
• Experience supervising postgraduate students.
• Preferable: certificates in rock mechanics and strata control (NQF level 3), Engineering Council of South Africa accreditation, and registration with SACNASP.
