Senior Integration Engineer

About the role

Jem, a fast-growing HR and financial wellness scale-up supporting deskless workers across South Africa with payroll, HR and benefits products, is hiring two Senior Integration Engineers in Johannesburg. You will design and build new client integrations with enterprise payroll, HR and ERP systems, turn repeated work into reusable patterns, and lead the technical conversation with enterprise IT teams while shipping product features alongside Product Engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Own the technical design and build of new enterprise integrations, end to end, including technical discovery with client IT teams, data models, auth, security review, environments and cutover
• Map the real business process across payroll, HR and ERP systems before coding, and design for the unhappy path (retries, idempotency, reconciliation, replay, partial failure)
• Take integrations through UAT, cutover and hypercare into steady state
• Build reusable connectors, patterns and tooling, and set and maintain integration standards (contracts, error handling, observability, documentation)
• Own reliability, monitoring and alerting across the live integration fleet
• Build integration workflows using AI, including coding agents, external APIs and MCP servers, and agents that monitor the integration fleet
• Raise the bar on integration work across the team through review and mentorship, and ship product features when needed

Required profile

• Professional experience in Python and/or TypeScript
• Demonstrable experience driving integrations end to end, not only maintaining them
• Experience working with enterprise IT teams (security reviews, change control, slow-moving stakeholders)
• Hands-on experience with iPaaS or middleware tooling; Flowgear is a plus and certification is sponsored
• Experience with event-driven architectures, APIs, webhooks and file-based data exchange
• Nice to have: payroll or HRIS domain experience, AI agent framework and LLM integration experience, and integration with PaySpace, Sage People or similar platforms
