Senior Diesel Mechanic M/F

About the role

White Horse Carriers, a company of Africa Global Logistics (MSC Group) with over 50 years of road haulage experience and a fleet of more than 520 vehicles, is looking for a Senior Diesel Mechanic for its Brentwood, Johannesburg workshop. The role supports the Zambia-based Zalawi Haulage cross-border truck and trailer fleet, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining the vehicles while leading assistant mechanics and keeping high quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and air system issues in Zalawi trucks and trailers using advanced diagnostic tools.
• Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, air and electrical systems.
• Carry out routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, tire inspections and system checks, and inspect trailer systems including suspension and coupling mechanisms.
• Assign tasks to assistant mechanics, mentor them and ensure work follows workshop SOPs.
• Document all work, including parts used and service records.
• Follow jobcard processes and stores/parts handling procedures, and liaise with the Deputy Technical Manager.
• Maintain safe, clean workspaces, use the right tools and follow safety protocols and PPE.

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a diesel mechanic, preferably with heavy-duty trucks and trailers.
• Relevant trade certification or diploma in diesel mechanics or automotive repair.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics and diagnostic reports.
• Valid driver's licence (Code 14 preferred but not mandatory).
• Full-time position in Brentwood, Johannesburg, mostly in the workshop with occasional on-road assistance; overtime or weekend work may be required.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems, hydraulics, basic air systems and electrical systems.
• Proficiency with advanced diagnostic equipment and troubleshooting.
• Competence in diagnosing and repairing basic air and electrical systems in heavy-duty vehicles.
• Leadership, problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills.
