Senior Data Engineer

About the role

Nebius, a provider of a full-stack cloud platform for AI and machine learning workflows, is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to take full ownership of the data platforms that power its analytical capabilities. The role is remote and open to South African professionals, and covers the entire lifecycle of data products, from architectural design and pipeline development to long-term operational maintenance.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement high-performance data pipelines and complex data models for analytics and business intelligence
• Evolving the data architecture, choosing storage and processing patterns for large data workloads
• Improve data observability so that lineage is clear and data quality is maintained
• Troubleshoot critical production issues, focusing on performance bottlenecks and data correctness
• Define data contracts and priorities with product and business stakeholders
• Mentor junior colleagues through code reviews, pair programming and architectural design sessions
• Take part in on-call rotations to keep the systems running

Required profile

• At least five years of experience in data or backend engineering, with a strong track record of deploying systems to production
• Ability to explain trade-offs in an ambiguous environment and influence the team's long-term technical direction
• Comfortable working across functional lines and explaining complex technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders

Required skills

• Advanced Python and SQL, with production-ready code and optimised complex queries
• Workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow, Dagster or Prefect
• Data modelling, storage trade-offs and resilient, testable and monitorable system design
