Risk-Based Inspection Engineer (RBI Engineer)

About the role

The RBI Engineer will lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the refinery’s Risk‑Based Inspection (RBI) programme. Using API RBI methodologies, you will optimise inspection intervals, prioritise activities by risk and ensure compliance with statutory and industry standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement and enhance the RBI programme in line with API 580 and API 581.
• Perform risk assessments for pressure vessels, piping, tanks, heat exchangers and related equipment.
• Identify degradation mechanisms and define appropriate inspection strategies and intervals.
• Review inspection results, update RBI assessments and support fitness‑for‑service evaluations (API 579).
• Create long‑term inspection plans that balance reliability and cost.
• Analyse inspection data, corrosion trends and equipment history to spot emerging risks.
• Participate in Management of Change, Process Hazard Analysis and Pre‑Start‑up Safety Reviews.
• Support turnaround planning, shutdowns, commissioning and major maintenance activities.
• Investigate equipment failures, conduct root‑cause analysis and monitor compliance with Mechanical and Asset Integrity Management Systems.
• Provide technical guidance, mentor junior staff and oversee contractor performance during inspections.

Required profile

• Strong engineering background with experience in refinery asset integrity.
• Proficiency in API RBI standards (API 580, API 581) and fitness‑for‑service (API 579).
• Ability to evaluate degradation mechanisms and perform risk‑based inspections.
• Experience with MOC, PHA, PSSR and root‑cause investigations.
• Commitment to safety, continuous improvement and teamwork.
