Registered Nurse - Cardiac ICU

About the role

A vacancy exists for a Registered Nurse (Cardiac ICU) at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital in Durban, reporting to the Unit Manager. The nurse provides holistic, high-quality care to critically ill patients so that outcomes are maximised in line with the hospital's strategic objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide quality basic and specialised nursing care, communicate continually with patients and families about their condition, and administer medication within the ethical and legal framework.
• Follow internal policies and protocols, and ensure quality management systems run according to unit specifications.
• Advocate for patients by escalating acuity to case management and notifying doctors of limitations.
• Work with a multi-disciplinary team, train and develop staff, and ensure the healthcare team works within its scope of practice.
• Manage stock according to unit policy, control staff hours and leave, and maintain infection control and a safe working environment through SHEQ alerts and incident reports.
• Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including orienting doctors to their preferences and executing their requests after rounds.
• Keep equipment and instrumentation in working order, report faults to the Unit Manager and Clinical Engineer, and educate staff and doctors on its use.
• Keep accurate records stored in line with legal and ethical requirements.

Required profile

• Degree or diploma in nursing.
• At least 2-3 years of experience in Cardiac ICU.
• Strong customer orientation, team player, energetic and well organised; able to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
• Willing to work the unit's flexi-hours system and call system.
