Admission Clerk

About the role

Life Westville Hospital in Durban is looking for an Admission Clerk who reports to the Reception Supervisor. The post holder manages admissions so that they run smoothly, working 12-hour shifts including weekends, public holidays and night duty.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out admission, discharge and receptionist duties in line with hospital protocols
• Liaise with medical aids to obtain authorisation for pre-admission or admission
• Handle general administration for patient admissions, including coding, billing and finalising and submitting casualty files
• Receive, receipt and handle cash, complete the drop safe register and deposit cash in designated safes
• Manage the No-Auth screens daily to facilitate patient authorisation and clear rejection screens daily to reduce financial risk
• Collect co-payments, deductibles and private fees where applicable, and follow up unregistered babies with schemes to obtain authorisation
• Work out estimates on the system for private patients according to group protocols
• Follow the process for admitting COID (injury on duty) patients and answer the switchboard when required
• Perform other tasks delegated by the line manager

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12 qualification; academic checks will be done on certificates
• Experience in a healthcare environment, including people management and customer service
• Comprehensive knowledge of admissions procedures
• Accurate handling of cash; ITC and criminal checks will be done on shortlisted candidates
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork and ability to work under pressure
• Available to come to work at short notice

Required skills

• Computer proficiency in the MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
• Working knowledge of Impilo and Imeds or similar hospital admission systems is an advantage
• Understanding of the private healthcare industry and basic financial principles are advantages
