Regional IT Manager - Cape Town

About the role

SA Metal Group, South Africa's oldest and largest metal recycling company, is looking for a Regional IT Manager to lead its Cape Town IT team. The role covers the entire region, including the Cape Town office, branches and after-hours support, and reports to the Group IT Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Take full management responsibility for the Cape Town IT team, setting priorities, standards and delegation, and running day-to-day operations including task allocation, rosters, leave and coverage
• Manage the team through objective-setting, performance reviews, development plans and succession planning
• Run the regional helpdesk queue from triage to closure quality, with scheduled reporting to the Group IT Manager
• Be accountable for all IT incidents, including major-incident response, technician and supplier coordination, business communication and root-cause reporting
• Run a documented change process for servers, firewalls, networks and plant-adjacent systems, with planned maintenance windows and tested rollback steps
• Manage daily estate health checks (backups, servers, Hyper-V, firewalls, mail flow, cameras, biometrics, branch links) and branch connectivity (LAN, WAN, wireless) across the Western Cape
• Support weighbridge and yard operations, deliver the region's security workload (patching, firewall hardening, MFA, backups, AD hygiene) and liaise with service providers
• Plan and deliver regional IT projects and rollouts, maintain runbooks, procedures and incident reports, and handle after-hours availability

Required profile

• At least 15 years of IT infrastructure experience and 8 years of direct line management of a medium-sized technical team
• Relevant IT qualification, preferably with a management component
• Proven track record of building teams, including recruitment, performance management, coaching and mentoring
• Own reliable transport, regular travel across Cape Town branches and ability to work overtime
• Proficient in English; sober habits and ability to work safely in an industrial environment

Required skills

• Firewalls (OS upgrades, SSL-VPN/IPsec, policy hardening, MFA)
• Windows Server 2016-2022 (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy)
• Hyper-V, including failover and disaster recovery
• Advantageous: MikroTik, Veeam, Azure, Fortinet NSE4/FCP, ITIL 4 Foundation, POPIA, security practitioner certification, security remediation programmes, multi-site rollouts, PSA/RMM service desks, SLA management, industrial/manufacturing environments, AI tools such as Claude AI
