Project Director Africa, Design and Construction

About the role

As the Project Director Africa, Design and Construction you will own the full project lifecycle for Belmond’s luxury portfolio across Africa, from concept to handover. You will ensure each renovation or new build meets the brand’s high standards for quality, timeliness, budget, sustainability and safety.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of CAPEX renovation projects across the Belmond Africa portfolio, managing scope, budget and schedule.
• Develop or supervise comprehensive project plans in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external partners.
• Secure funding, appoint consultants, and drive design and construction activities to meet agreed timelines and budgets.
• Act as the primary liaison between Belmond, contractors, architects, engineers and other external parties.
• Identify and mitigate risks, report issues promptly and keep senior leadership informed.
• Conduct regular design reviews, site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with design documents, safety, sustainability and statutory regulations.
• Oversee contract creation with contractors, consultants and vendors, working closely with the legal department.
• Prepare and present status reports to senior leadership, property teams and line managers.
• Manage final inspections, punch‑list completion and handover of as‑built documentation, including O&M manuals.

Required profile

• Deep understanding of the construction industry, particularly the South African market.
• Strong financial management capability and experience preparing and presenting project reports.
• Technical acumen to ensure projects meet performance, sustainability and safety standards.
• Experience in the luxury travel or hospitality sector is preferred; experience with luxury lodges is advantageous.
• Knowledge of local and international construction and safety regulations is essential.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or Quantity Surveying is advantageous.
