Professional Nurse – Occupational Health & Safety (Grade 1/2)

About the role

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness seeks a Professional Nurse specialised in Occupational Health and Safety to lead and manage occupational health services within a hospital environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, manage and implement an Occupational Medical Surveillance Programme.
• Coordinate and manage the Occupational Health clinical service for staff.
• Identify and mitigate occupational risks across the hospital.
• Ensure governance, compliance and effective management of Occupational Health Services.
• Provide training, capacity building and raise Occupational Health awareness.

Required profile

• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse.
• Basic nursing qualification (diploma/degree) plus a post‑basic or postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health Nursing.
• Grade 1: minimum 4 years general nursing experience; Grade 2: minimum 14 years, including at least 10 years after the specialised qualification.
• Valid driver’s licence (Code B/EB) and willingness to work overtime and flexible hours.

Required skills

• Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and ethical frameworks applicable in the Western Cape.
• Ability to plan, organise, analyse, problem‑solve and make decisions.
• Leadership skills to achieve strategic goals of the Occupational Health service.
• Computer literacy – proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
