Process Controller – PM1

About the role

Sappi is seeking a Process Controller for its PM1 paper machine. The role focuses on safe, efficient operation of the KLB process to maximise production output, quality and cost‑effectiveness while minimising downtime and effluent.

Key responsibilities

• Operate the PM1 process safely, achieving target output, quality and cost performance.
• Perform pre‑start inspections, plant start‑ups and shutdowns following best practices.
• Monitor paper quality, adjust furnish mixes and take corrective actions on deviations.
• Identify abnormal operating conditions, report equipment defects and log downtime in the OEE system.
• Maintain operational records in SAP PM, work permits, OEE entries and the electronic logbook.
• Communicate plant status and issues to the Shift Superintendent and other stakeholders.
• Support safety, health, environment and quality compliance, conduct plant inspections and uphold 5S standards.
• Act as Shift Superintendent when required and coach team members.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Physical Science.
• National Diploma in Pulp and Paper (advantageous) or NQF Level 5 qualification.
• Minimum 3 years experience on a paper‑machine manufacturing process.
• Valid Outside Operator licence.

• Operation of paper‑machine processes (PM1).
• Use of SAP PM notifications and OEE system for performance tracking.
• Overhead crane operation and adherence to lock‑out procedures.
• Monitoring and controlling paper quality characteristics.
• Conducting pre‑start inspections and plant shutdown tasks.
