Pharmacist – Community Service (Fixed-Term)

About the role

The Wits Health Consortium is seeking a qualified Pharmacist to join the Clinical Trial and NICU pharmacy at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital on a community‑service fixed‑term basis. The role involves providing pharmaceutical care, managing study drugs, and supporting neonatal patients in a high‑volume teaching hospital.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and report any pharmacy‑related issues in access programmes to the Programme/Project Manager.
• Act as primary liaison for study investigators and programme managers on pharmacy matters.
• Order, receive, dispense, return and destroy medication and study drugs in line with sponsor and regulatory requirements, ensuring accurate documentation.
• Maintain drug accountability and compliance monitoring for each study participant.
• Provide patient counseling on proper medication use and take corrective actions when needed.
• Support the expansion and efficient operation of the pharmacy, including compounding (admixing) medicines for NICU patients.
• Participate in sponsor and regulatory meetings, audits and monitoring visits.
• Develop and implement pharmacy plans that meet sponsor and programme specifications.
• Evaluate patient medication needs, ensure safety and effectiveness of prescribed therapy, and verify compliance with SOPs and statutory regulations (GPP, GCP, GMP).

Required profile

• Registered pharmacist qualified to practice in South Africa.
• Experience or training in clinical‑trial pharmacy and/or neonatal intensive care settings.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary hospital teams.

Required skills

• Medication ordering, receipt, dispensing and destruction procedures.
• Drug accountability and compliance monitoring.
• Knowledge of Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.
• Patient counseling on medication use.
• Pharmaceutical compounding (admixing) for NICU patients.
• Documentation and reporting in accordance with sponsor and regulatory guidelines.
