Pharmacist – Clinical Trials & NICU Pharmacy

About the role

The University of the Witwatersrand’s Wits Health Consortium is seeking a qualified Pharmacist to support clinical trial activities and the NICU pharmacy at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. The role involves ensuring safe, compliant medication management for study participants and vulnerable neonatal patients.

Key responsibilities

• Manage ordering, receipt, dispensing, return and destruction of study drugs in line with sponsor and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate drug accountability and compliance monitoring for each trial subject.
• Provide pharmaceutical care to NICU patients, including medication admixing and patient counselling.
• Act as primary liaison between the pharmacy, study investigators and programme managers for any pharmacy‑related issues.
• Participate in sponsor and regulatory monitoring visits and develop pharmacy plans specific to each programme.
• Evaluate patient medication needs, ensure therapy compliance and document all actions according to SOPs.
• Support the pharmacy’s expansion initiatives and uphold statutory regulations (GPP, GCP, GMP).

Required profile

• Registered pharmacist qualified to practice in South Africa.
• Experience in clinical trial pharmacy operations and/or neonatal intensive care settings.
• Strong understanding of South African regulatory standards and sponsor requirements.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary hospital teams.
