Onsite Laboratory Project Manager

About the role

SGS, a global testing, inspection and certification company, is looking for an Onsite Laboratory Project Manager in Sandton. The role covers the review, assessment and creation of financial models and proposals for new and existing onsite laboratories, and works with operating affiliates to plan, schedule and coordinate the build and startup of new onsite labs.

Key responsibilities

• Use information gathered by regional teams to model each onsite opportunity, then work with team and regional management to get technical and operational sign-off on the model.
• Prepare or help prepare technical proposals and tender submissions, and communicate with clients to develop opportunities, confirm RFP information and negotiate wins.
• Work with local operating teams to schedule and track designs, builds, renovations and expansions of existing onsite laboratories.
• Confirm and monitor laboratory equipment purchases so they meet global standards and arrive on schedule.

Required profile

• University degree in a science or engineering programme, with a strong preference for a geosciences profession such as geology, mines, mineralogy, environmental mineralogy or soil science.
• Technical experience in a geosciences-related field, with some aspects of business and personnel management.
• Strong working knowledge of the mining and minerals industry.
• Ability to manage a team and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, and to work well under pressure.
• Extended or irregular hours are required due to global team involvement.
• Excellent verbal and written English, including grammar and composition; proficiency in another language (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic etc.) is valued.
